Home Appliance Repair Project Tips And Advice For Success

Appliances by jamesharv2005

I remember my Grandmother's refrigerator, Antique, working, full of style, but the color, was this hideous pea green. Now I have my antique refrigerator that flows with the theme and matches the colors used in my kitchen! Follow these steps to paint that unsightly appliance into a savvy statement of decorum!Nearly every home has one, a kitchen utensil that sticks out like a sore thumb, well not in today's do it yourself world, here's everything you need to make that appliance match in just a few simple steps. The best part is, you can do it at a fraction of the cost of buying a new appliance!

1.Take note on it's condition.
Does it have dents? Scratches? Rust? These are some of the things you will need to know before you go to the local home improvement store. Are you just touching it up or are you painting the entire thing? Some scratches can be removed with some light sanding of the surface- don't over-sand, you don't want to chip excess paint around the scratch.

2. The Purchase
You'll want to fill in dents and deep scratches and stop or prevent rust before you apply any new paint to the surface of the object.
Choose your color and purchase your acrylic paint from your local stores or order them on-line, please be sure to order enough to cover the entire area, it's always better to have a little extra than not enough. If this appliance is a conductor of heat, be sure to read the labels carefully and purchase a product that has some heat resistance.

2a- for scratches and dent touch ups only, a small can of paint and a brush is recommended.

2b- in larger projects,( the entire appliance) spray is both quicker and easier to handle.

3. Clean your surfaces completely and allow to dry.
Remove any foreign objects from the appliance that could have built up: dust, smoke, grease etc, then let dry. A light cleanser and scouring pad will work great.

4. Fill, sand, or treat any discrepancies using the proper fillers, fine grit sandpapers or rust prevention products. Use these products according to their directions labeled by the manufacturer. Wipe clean with a light detergent and water.

5. Cover, tape, or remove the parts of the appliance that will not be painted.

6. Place or make sure that your appliance is in a clean, dust-free, well ventilated area.

7. Reading the label directions and following carefully, paint the appliance. Allow to dry completely before placing on the second coat. (If additional coating is necessary, allow coats of paint to dry between applications.) You may choose to use a clear glossy coat to put over the paint for extra protection and a sleek look.

Now that you've finished, you're proud of your work and the new look of your flashy new equipment, invite some friends or family over to show it off or spread the word and give someone else these steps so that they may achieve their home beauty as well!
